St. Mary’s Cathedral Bell Tower Art | Original 5×7″ Oil Painting & 10×12″ Print
Bells captures the rare privilege of witnessing the eight bells being rung at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick. This intimate artwork emerged from the artist’s personal connection with the bell ringers and the captivating experience of being present in the tower as ancient bells filled the air with resonant sound.
The cathedral’s bell tower, added in the fourteenth century and rising to 36.58 meters, houses eight bells that have called the community to worship, marked celebrations, and tolled for sorrows across centuries. This painting honours both the physical presence of these bronze instruments and the dedicated ringers who keep this living tradition alive.
Witnessing a living tradition: The artist had the honour of meeting all of the bell ringers and observing the intricate choreography required to ring the bells. The experience is visceral—feeling the vibrations through the stone, watching the concentrated effort of the ringers, hearing the cascading tones that pour out over Limerick’s streets and rooftops. This artwork translates that multi-sensory encounter into visual form.
The bells represent continuity and community voice. They’ve rung through medieval ceremonies, survived sieges, announced royal visits, and continue today to mark weddings, services, and significant moments in civic life. The ringers themselves form a dedicated community, preserving skills passed down through generations while welcoming newcomers to learn the ancient art.
This piece connects to the broader Cathedral Project themes of sound bringing stone to life, community maintaining tradition, and the cathedral as a space where past and present harmonise. The bells are perhaps the most public voice of the cathedral—heard by those who never step inside, reaching across the city as a temporal marker and communal anchor.
